Today at the San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Capcom will be releasing a game based on the Strider franchise for the PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. This new title will be releasing early 2014.

However, while Capcom will be putting it out; they will not be developing all of it – that task goes to Double Helix Games, known for Silent Hill Homecoming and the upcoming Killer Instinct reboot. They will be working along with Capcom Osaka, and some of the staff that worked on the original Strider games.

Unlike the previous games, which were stage-based linear hack and slash titles, this new title will take the original hack and slash gameplay and blend it with Metroid-Vania style gameplay. Strider Hiryu must traverse the massive, interconnected world of Kazakh City collecting upgrades, new powers and abilities.

While it’s understandable that people may not be too excited at the prospect of the developers of Battleship: The Video Game rebooting one of Capcom’s most respected characters,  it may be Capcom learning that people actually like their old franchises…

Maybe one franchise in particular could get their attention again, one that fans adore…

Naw, Capcom would never touch Pirate Ship Higemaru again. Bastards.
