Earthbound Suddenly Drops Onto the Wii U eShop Today

A while back, during a Nintendo Direct, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced that Shigesato Itoi’s cult RPG Earthbound will be heading for the Wii U eShop. Today, July 18th, the game has been released onto North American and European eShops, for the cost of $9.99 USD.

The game was released to the Japanese eShop in March of this year (where it’s called Mother 2), but only now has it come to western eShops. What makes this release special is that it will also come out in Europe – which did not receive the game when it was released on the SNES.

I hope Earthbound succeeds on the eShop; with the announcement of its release, it looked like Nintendo finally understood that this franchise is a massive cult gaming phenomenon – but we’ll have to wait and see if Nintendo will follow it up with the other Mother games.
