What began as a bright summer Monday for the gaming community turned into a somber day when the news of Ryan Davis’ passing on July 3, 2013 became public. Some questioned if this was some horrible and twisted joke while others hoped that it was just some bad dream that they would wake up from. Sadly, the news is true and the world has lost one of gaming journalism’s greatest influences last week.

Born in 1979, Ryan Davis spent eight years at GameSpot where he reviewed video games and co-hosted shows such as Time Trotters. He would later leave GameSpot to find Giant Bomb with fellow co-founder Jeff Gerstmann in 2007. He hosted one of the most popular web podcasts, Giant Bombcast, since its inception in 2008. He recently got married just last month and was looking forward to the next chapter in his life. At 34 years old, death is just not something one plans. Especially at a time in one’s life when they have so much going for them.

Even if you didn’t know him personally, Ryan Davis had a way to touch those who just knew of him. From being the influence behind fellow journalists and myself to making anyone who talked to him via Twitter or Facebook feel special and like one of his friends, Davis leaves behind a hole in our lives that will never be the same again. At Vivid Gamer, we are heartbroken to learn about this and offer our sincerest condolences to his family, wife, friends, and everyone whose day is just that much dimmer to his passing.
