Age of Empires Coming to iOS and Android Platforms

In a licensing deal with Japanese social gaming firm KLab, Microsoft has confirmed that a mobile version of Age of Empires will be developed for iOS and Android devices. According to a report by Reuters via Nikkei, the game will be free-to-play and launched worldwide by the end of the fiscal year 2013. In a statement issued to Polygon, a Microsoft spokesperson goes on to state that other titles are also in the making but nothing has been revealed beyond Age of Empires. The only lingering question is: What version will players expect to see? With multiplayer gameplay gaining popularity as demonstrated by the lineup of games introduced at E3, it’s most likely that we’ll be seeing an adaptation of Age of Empires Online.

After the release of Kinectimals for iOS in December 2011, it comes as no surprise that Microsoft is planning to introduce more console and PC games to mobile devices. Halo: Spartan Assault, for instance, is an upcoming title that will debut this July exclusively for Windows 8 devices. In the mean time, I can’t say that the idea of controlling armies at the very tip of my fingers is a bad one.
