1UP, Gamespy, And UGO Shut Down

1UP, Gamespy, And UGO Shut Down

Earlier this month, we reported that Ziff Davis had acquired IGN Entertainment for an undisclosed amount of money. Many had wondered just what plans the digital media company had for the newly acquired websites. Would Ziff Davis continue to allow these sites to run or would they be shut down in favor of putting more focus on some of the stronger sites?

We got our answer today when it was announced that Ziff Davis was shutting down sites such as 1UP, Gamespy, and UGO, while layoffs were being reported for IGN. This news is never something we want to hear as it means the loss of many jobs. Fellow online video game publication Kotaku reached out to IGN in hopes of learning more. A spokesperson for IGN replied back:

“We are focusing on our two flagships, IGN and AskMen. Unfortunately, as a result, we have decided to close sites and restructure our teams accordingly.”

You can view the official memo detailing the news sent to IGN staff on Kotaku’s article here. We at Vivid Gamer are sad to hear this news and want to tell those affected by this that we wish the best for you and to thank you for what you’ve done for the community.
