Sweeney Predicts Next Generation Games Will Cost Double To Develop

According to Epic Games chief technology officer Tim Sweeney during a keynote adress at the Montreal International Game Summit, the expected development costs for next generation games are predicted to double compared to what current costs are. In reference to this, he spoke particularly about the breathtaking Samaritan tech demo shown in 2011. While impressively showcasing Direct X 11 technology in a modified version of Unreal Engine 3, Sweeney said the 3 minute clip took 4 months to create and a team of 30 people. He went on to say the following:

“If we extrapolate that into creating an entire game, we were worried that the cost would go up by a factor of three or four or even five in the next generation. And of course, we felt that was not acceptable.”

Since the tech demo, Epic has taken precautions to lower development costs and has aimed to be efficient with their manpower, but Sweeney is still predicting that development costs will double.
