Xbox Marketplace Update: August 22, 2012

Xbox Marketplace Update: August 22, 2012

The Summer of Arcade is over and sadly, this wasn’t a hallmark year. Sure Dust: An Elysian Tail was great and Deadlight was decent, but there wasn’t much compared to past years. Perhaps the three new arcade titles, five new games on demand and five games on sale this week may help us overlook this lackluster Summer of Arcade.

Deal of the Week

  • TNT Racers – 800 pts 400 pts – This multiplayer racing game is similar to any various wacky power-up racer on the marketplace. For $5 though, this may be worth checking out.
  • Faery: Legends of Avalon – 1200 pts 600 pts – Faery: Legends of Avalon is a Role Playing/Adventure game packed with an original and unique atmosphere, and a graphics design close to illustration. The game immerses players in a fantasy world inhabited by many colourful characters and magical creatures. Reviews weren’t good though so you may want to give this a pass.
  • Crazy Machines Elements – 800 pts 400 pts – In grand Crazy Machines tradition, players must create wacky chain reactions using different parts and accomplish the tasks set out in their mission, from knocking vases over to blowing out candles. Like Faery, this too received poor scores when it released a year ago.
  • Dead Block – 800 pts 400 pts – Perhaps this is the week of mediocre games on sale because this too received poor scores when it released last year. Although the premise seemed fun (build defenses to survive against the zombie assault with friends) the gameplay was poorly executed and lacked any real staying power.
  • Dead Block: More Dead To Block Map Pack – 240 pts 120 pts – Play four new maps including a slaughter house and turkish bath.
  • SkyDrift – 1200 pts 600 pts – Finally a good game on sale! Admire the amazingly detailed dynamic terrains and incredible vistas, from a desert canyon to a tropical island to arctic glaciers based on the most spectacular and exotic locations all over the planet. Enjoy this sky-racer for half off this week.
  • SkyDrift: Extreme Fighters Pack – 160 pts 80 pts – The three most powerful and deadliest planes of SkyDrift are ready for take off. You can swoop with the indomitable bird of prey that fits your style or the actual event: – Vanguard – Sparrow X1 – Triwing Vintage All three planes are immediately available for every single and multiplayer challenge in any game mode.
  • SkyDrift: Gladiator Pack – 400 pts 200 pts – Fly in the two classic multiplayer modes Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, where only the number of opponents you eliminate will earn you honor and respect. Improve your hunter skills in 6 breathtaking arenas including Warfactory, U.F.O. and Scrapyard.

Sales & Specials

(These can only be accessed after playing the Scratch & Match game in the Sales & Specials App)

  • Bomberman LIVE – 800 pts 400 pts – Battle with up to seven friends in this Xbox LIVE version of everyone’s favorite party game.
  • Bomberman Battlefest – 800 pts 400 pts – Like above, this too is an eight player bomb-fest with new powerups, team play and more costumes then ever.
  • Bomberman LIVE Bomb-up Pack 2 – 200 pts 120 pts – Get a new gameplay feature (bomb shelters), two new arenas, and ten new characters

Xbox LIVE Arcade

The Expendables 2 Videogame

Release Date: August 17, 2012
Price: 1200 pts
Developer: Zootfly
Publisher: Ubisoft

Four Expendables (Barney, Gunnar, Caesar and Yin-Yang) are hired to rescue an extremely valuable, kidnapped Chinese billionaire with blah blah blah. Let’s be honest here, nobody expects this to be anything more then a quick movie-cash in that make entice players with the promise of great four-player action. But it’s not. Don’t get fooled into spending $15 on what is obviously going to be a poorly designed experience. Seriously.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Release Date: August 22, 2012
Price: 1200 pts
Developer: Valve Corporation
Publisher: Valve Corporation

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive expands on the classic team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it first launched 12 years ago. Featuring a massive arsenal of over 45 weapons, loads of maps, new game modes, new visuals, leaderboards, and over 165 awards to be earned. CS:GO is a must-have tactical shooter.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure HD Ver.

Release Date: August 22, 2012
Price: 1600 pts
Developer: Capcom Co.
Publisher: Capcom Co.

I understand that this PlayStation/Dreamcast title has great fanfare and is based on the popular manga of the same name, but I can’t understand why Capcom is charging $20 for what’s essentially a nicer filtered port with online capabilities added. Street Fighter II HD had completely redrawn sprites as well as remastered gameplay and that was reasonable at $15 so why $20 for arguably less work?

Games on Demand

  • Ratatouille – $19.99 – This Pixar movie-licensed title puts players in the role of Remy, the young rat looking to become a great french chef. Dash and glide through 5 different worlds as you explore the bustling streets of Paris.
  • Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City – $39.99 – This squad-based shooter bears little resemblance to it’s predecessors outside of story and characters. It was poorly received when it released earlier this year but fans may get a kick out of playing through the story mode. If you’re one of them, I’d suggest hunting down a physical copy because it’s much cheaper and the game is hardly worth $40.
  • Rugby World Cup 2011 – $19.99 – The official game of Rugby World Cup 2011. Be right in the centre of the mud, sweat, tears and passion as you take your team from the qualifiers right the way to the final. Back your team and fight every inch for the right to proudly lift the Webb Ellis trophy!
  • Metal Gear Solid: HD Edition – $24.99 – Odd pricing aside this is essential gaming for nearly every gamer out there. Regardless of the often non-sensical story, this package gives players two of the best games released for last generation’s consoles at a great budget price. Metal Gear Solid 2 was a landmark title when it released and Metal Gear Solid 3 is still considered one of the best released last generation. If you’ve yet to play these two, do yourself a favor and download them now.
  • Left 4 Dead – $19.99 – It’s odd how the sequel was released for Games on Demand first but regardless, this was the original team-based zombie shooter from Valve. Although Left 4 Dead 2 improved on nearly every aspect, the originals cast was arguably much more enjoyable.

Notable DLC

  • Sleeping Dogs Demo – Free – If you’ve been on the fence on whether to pick up Sleeping Dogs which released yesterday, check out the demo. This demo features a taste of the martial arts combat, free-running, and intense gun fights awaiting those who purchase the full title.
  • NHL 13 Demo – Free - Featuring the biggest innovation for the franchise in six years, NHL 13 accurately captures the speed, creativity, and strategy of today’s NHL with revolutionary True Performance Skating.
  • Transformers: FoC Multiplayer Havoc Pack – 800 pts - Download this pack to get 5 new characters (WHEELJACK, ULTRA MAGNUS, BLAST OFF, PERCEPTOR and ZETA PRIME) and their associated parts for use in Customization for Multiplayer.
  • Quantum Conundrum: The Desmond Debacle – 240 pts – Enjoy this brand new adventure in an unexplored wing of Quadwrangle Manor. Experience Desmond, the drinking bird, as you’ve never seen him before in even more brain twisting and complex puzzles!

Indie Game Highlight

Each week I will do my best to highlight an Xbox LIVE Indie Game that catches my eye. If none of the games look good, I’ll instead showcase an older game that is still deserving of your time and money.
