SWTOR Going Free-to-Play This Fall

SWTOR Going Free-to-Play This Fall

Earlier today the EA President, Frank Gibeau, announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) subscriptions have fallen below one million. This announcement comes hot on the heels of the announcement that SWTOR will make a free-to-play option available starting this fall.

SWTOR will still offer the subscription model, so the free-to-play model is not without its limitations. Free-to-play players will have to purchase in-game currency called “Cartel Coins” if they want to take advantage of special items and features. Current subscribers will be given some Cartel Coins to make the transition easier.

The new model should increase the game’s playerbase with both new and returning players. BioWare should hopefully make some big changes next and add new content to make those playing for free want to subscribe to the game to unlock all available features.
