Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land PC Review

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land PC Review

Back in March, I reviewed a strategy RPG title for iOS devices that would have made the great Cthulhu proud. Those who read it might also recall me mentioning how I felt the same title could translate well into a PC game. It seems as if Red Wasp Designs were one step ahead of me. Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land did well on the iOS, but how well does it fare on the PC?

The story between the iOS version and the PC one is identical. In Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land, players are deep in the trenches of World War I as they take on enemy forces along with the supernatural horrors that plague their sanity. If you enjoyed the tales woven by H.P. Lovecraft, the story will be right up your alley.

In the review for the iOS version, I mentioned that the graphics looked good enough to work on the PC. If anything, I feel that the graphics look a bit sharper on the PC. Red Wasp Design also managed to port the quality music and sound effects from the iOS version to the PC without any loss in that area of the game. The dark and sinister tone that the graphics and sound effects gives the game works great for the source material.

The gameplay works just about the same way. Except you use your mouse to select your actions. This actually worked better in my opinion than the touch controls on the iPod Touch. You still have the same two difficulties offered, and for newcomers, there is the tutorial. It is always good to take advantage of that even if you played this title on your iOS device. It should also be noted that just because Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land was ported to the PC, the hellish difficulty is still the same. This title will tax your mind as you try to survive the onslaught of enemy foes. Little mistakes might not seem to be a factor at first. However, making the wrong move one too many times is bound to have your party decimated.

As with the iOS version, players can expect to lose themselves when playing Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land. Regardless of whether you spend ten to fifteen minutes per session or play for a couple hours at a time, this title does offer countless hours of playtime. It also does well to provide a good sense of replayability, as no two playthroughs are the same. This is thanks to the many options one has in order to survive.

While Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land on the PC is basically the same title as the one on iOS devices, it is still worth the price tag of $4.99. In order to play the PC version, you will need to download Intel’s AppUp Center for free. Fans of Lovecraftian lore and fans of this title should definitely pick this game up.

UPDATE: Those who support indie developers by using the IndieCity website can also use that client to download Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land to play on the PC. Also, Red Wasp Design has recently launched the title for Android devices.
