Aion Will Go Free-to-Play in North America

Aion Will Go Free-to-Play in North America

Aion has proven to be critically successful MMORPG, but it seems that the free-to-play business model may be in developer NCSoft’s best interest. The company recently announced that the free-to-play transition planned for Europe later this month will correspond with a North American transition of the same kind later this year. On its official website, NCSoft details what the change will entail:

Many other “free” MMOs limit players by restricting access to content, or force them to pay for a normal game experience. In Aion’s Truly Free model, players have unrestricted access to all content from level 1-60, no strings attached! Aion Truly Free is a key aspect of Aion: Ascension™, which also contains the Aion 3.0 content update. A plethora of new experiences await, including new zones, increased level cap, mounts, and housing, all of which is also Truly Free!

“Truly Free” sounds a bit too good to be… well, true. Still, NCSoft insists that “Truly Free” means just that. If that’s the case, players can look forward to the following when Aion relaunches as Aion: Ascension this spring:

  • No subscription fee.
  • No account restrictions. Visit any zone, chat in any channel, sell any amount of stuff on the trade broker.
  • Robust countermeasures to combat game abuse.
  • No hassles. Create your account, download the game, and play.
  • No harassment with offers and promotions.
  • New features and content to be announced later.
