Skyrim Creation Kit and Hi-Res Textures Available Now for PC

Mod support and extensive community tools have kept The Elder Scrolls games fresh for millions of PC gamers since 2002′s Morrowind. Last year’s smash hit Skyrim is built on Bethesda’s new Creation Engine, and the developers are providing technological wizards with the same tools used to make the game. Earlier today, the Creation Kit debuted for the PC version of Skyrim. Modders will be able to construct new environments and objects, script quest scenarios, write NPC dialogue, and tinker with every facet of the game. The results, published in the form of mod packages, can then be shared with the community via popular sites like Skyrim Nexus or, for the first time ever, on Steam via the Steam Workshop.

To celebrate the release of the long-awaited Creation Kit, Bethesda has also released the Skyrim High-Resolution Texture Pack as a free download to Skyrim owners. The pack deals extensive upgrades to the game’s visuals via sharper and more detailed textures. Meanwhile, over at the Skyrim Nexus, a contest is being held for mod authors with some pretty hefty prizes. You might not be ready to start building high-quality mods with the Creation Kit, but you can bet that whatever is being cooked up right now will be great additions to the game over the next several months and years.
