Xbox Marketplace Update: February 1, 2012

Xbox Marketplace Update: February 1, 2012

Welcome to the beginning of what’s sure to be a great month for the Xbox Marketplace.  Not only do we have the beginning of the Xbox LIVE House Party promotion to look forward to, but we’ve got a nice discount on one of the best downloadable titles of 2011 as well as a couple new demos to play through.

Deal of the Week (Gold Members)

  • Bastion – 1200 pts 600 pts – Unfortunately there’s only one deal this week but when it’s for a game this good, there’s really no need to complain.  I’ve already gushed about this gem giving it a 9.5 in my review, but if you’ve yet to download this Zeldaesque title, I suggest you do so now.  Bastion has already gone on to win multiple awards as well as receive high praise from all over the gaming community.  Get it for only 600 points (that’s $7.50 in non-confusing currency) and experience one of the best from last year’s Summer of Arcade.

Arcade

Rhythm Party

Release Date: February 1, 2012
Price: 800 pts
Developer: Konami Digital Entertainment
Publisher: Konami Digital Entertainment

This Kinect rhythm action game looks to infuse a sort of Dance Masters/DDR style with gameplay akin to the DS title Elite Beat Agents. Using your body as the controller (obviously) players can develop their own dance moves while hitting floating notes to the beat of many renowned international artists.  While it won’t replace Dance Central 2, a cheap alternative is always a welcome addition.

Double Fine Happy Action Theater

Release Date: February 1, 2012
Price: 800 pts
Developer: Double Fine Studios
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios

Double Fine’s second outing for the Kinect is oddly reminiscent of the PS2 game EyeToy:Play for the under-appreciated peripheral of the same name.  This collection of 18 minigames is odd to say the least, with strange effects and somewhat cheesy activities to partake in ranging from dealing with hot lava to stomping cities Godzilla style.  It’s understandable to be on the fence with this title (especially after watching the trailer) but keep in mind that it’s from the fine folks at Double Fine who produced a very enjoyable Sesame Street title.

Games on Demand

  • Section 8 – $29.99 - Section 8 is an intense first-person shooter that gives players unprecedented strategic control over the battlefield, employing tactical assets and on-demand vehicle deliveries to dynamically alter the flow of combat. Set in the distant future when humanity is facing a growing insurrection among its colonies, Earth dispatches the elite 8th Armored Infantry to turn the tide.
  • Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures – $39.99 – This week’s overpriced download goes to the hunting game Cabela’s Outdoor Adventures.  For a game released back in 2009 it’s absurd to charge $40 knowing there are newer iterations released annually.  If you truly want to pick this game up, order it from Amazon for $20 here.
  • The First Templar – $29.99 – The First Templar follows the story of a French Templar and his companion, a noble lady who has been proclaimed a heretic. Taking control over these two unlikely allies, the player must uncover the mysteries behind the Templar Order, play a role in a grand conspiracy, and discover the secret of the Holy Grail.

Notable DLC

  • Syndicate – Co-op Demo – Syndicate is a re-imagination of the classic 1993 Syndicate game – a cyber punk FPS set in a dystopian world where large Syndicates rule and Business is War. In the 4-player co-op demo, team-up to take down rival Syndicate Cayman Global. Blast your way in and utilize your military grade DART6 chip to breach enemies and the environment as you battle for market dominance and your life. Some takeovers are more hostile than others.
  • Dance Central 2 track “Forget You” by Cee-Lo Green – 240 pts – This new track lets players groove to the catchy (PG version) of Cee-Lo Green’s famous hit.
  • Crackle App – Free – Sony Pictures’ Crackle app has hit the marketplace and is packed with tons of free TV shows and movies.
  • Dead Island – Ryder Strong DLC – 800 pts – Players have survived the terrors that took place on Banoi, but did they really get all the pieces of the puzzle? Dead Island’s Ryder White DLC lets you re-experience the Zombie outbreak, but this time through the eyes of the villain. Play through Ryder White´s story and understand the motivation behind the acts of this military man.
  • Iron Brigade (formerly Trenched): Rise of the Martian Bear DLC – 400 pts - After defeating the monovision threat across Europe, Africa, and The Pacific, continue your service in the mobile trenches with Iron Brigade: Rise of the Martian Bear.  Face Vlad’s most horrific new Monovision Constructs in a brand new Martian Campaign.  Unlock over 80 new pieces of loot to battle the Tubes in 4 defense missions, 2 survival missions, and an all new Boss mission!
