Xbox Marketplace Update: December 13, 2011

Xbox Marketplace Update: December 13, 2011

Microsoft has had a policy that wouldn’t allow former PSN exclusives to be ported to XBLA.  They felt that games had to be released simultaneously for both platforms, or not at all.  On the other hand, PSN users have gotten some of the best XBLA titles in past years and even though they were a year late (Castle Crashers, Braid, Limbo) the fact is that they’re still physically there.  For the first time in history, Microsoft is releasing a former PSN exclusive on XBLA with Joe Danger: Special Edition.  This is remarkable and hopefully will change Microsoft’s policy so that other exclusives to PSN like the Pixeljunk franchise or even Fat Princess may someday have a shot on XBLA.

Deal of the Week (Gold Members)

December 13 – December 19 “Japan’s Finest”

  • Bangai-O HD - 800 pts 400 pts – An omni-directional shooter done in the vein of shmups like Ikaruga, Bangai-O HD is loaded with 100 levels of puzzle-filled frenetic action.  Key game highlights include: a Level Editor Tool, which allows players to design and share their own levels with friends; a unique design style evident in the insane gameplay, from the types of enemies to the award system of collecting delectable fruit; and a combo system that lets players build up devastating counter attacks of up to 1,000 missiles for an explosive advantage.
  • Hard Corps: Uprising - 1200 pts 600 pts -This 2D side-scroller pays homage to Konami’s own Contra series with frantic action, screen filling bosses, and powerups pulled from Contra.
  • Radiant Silvergun - 1200 pts 600 pts – From one of the premiere localizers, Treasure, comes the restored Radiant Silvergun.  The gameplay that made this a legend remains unchanged, but a hidden “Ikaruga-style” shooting mode gives everyone something new. Previously only available in Japan, Radiant Silvergun on Xbox LIVE Arcade also provides leaderboards, co-op play locally or over Xbox LIVE, downloadable replays, and improved visuals making it the version to own.
  • Guwange - 800 pts 400 pts – The modern kings of shmups has brought over the classic shooter Guwange.  Though you’re not technically piloting a ship, the game looks and feels like vertical/horizontal shooters once again similar to Ikaruga.

Games on Demand

  • DW 6 Empires$29.99 – Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires is a fusion of fast-paced action and tactical strategy.  Conquer your foes and unite all of China under your banner as a Ruler, or experience the thrill of battle from a new perspective as an Officer.  Play as a Musou hero of legend, or create up to 100 customized warriors of your own design! Choose your own path through the chaos of the Three Kingdoms!
  • Alice: Madness Returns - $39.99 – I’ve reviewed Alice: Madness Returns before and while I admit that it wasn’t a horrible game, it’s most definitely not worth $40.  Throw in the fact that the included download of the original title isn’t included and you’re left with a buggy, overpriced yet twisted adventure.
  • Red Faction: Armageddon$39.99 – Half a century after the Red Faction resistance freed Mars, the red planet again becomes a battleground. Colonists struggle for survival in the underground mines after the surface is rendered uninhabitable. When Darius Mason, grandson of revolution heroes Alec Mason and Samanya, unknowingly releases a long-dormant evil, Armageddon is unleashed on Mars. As settlements are torn asunder, only Darius and the Red Faction can save mankind.
