Tiny Tower Official iPhone Game of the Year

Tiny Tower Official iPhone Game of the Year

Apple has started its yearly App Store Rewind, featuring the best apps, music, books, and more from 2011. On this list are the picks for best iPhone app and game, with Instagram taking the prize for official best iPhone App of 2011, and Tiny Tower being honored as best game of 2011.

The official description on the App Store Rewind page explains the game for those of you who might not be familiar with it:

“This addictive app taps our inner Donald Trump, as we grow an economic empire by building towers and populating them with businesses and blitzens. We find its marriage of time management and social gameplay irrestible.”

It’s definitely one of my absolute favorite iOS games (as anyone who has read my review or listened to our podcasts know), and part of what makes it so great is that it’s universal, free, and can be truly enjoyed without spending any money if you don’t want to (unlike many freemium games that lock you out of nearly all content if you don’t spend a ton of money).

Part of what makes the game great are the regular major updates. For example, you can now rename your floors, create your own Bitzens, share your tower online, send stocked items to friends as gifts, purchase costumes for your Bitzens, and extend your gameplay with missions (new ones added regularly). The game also supports Gamecenter achievements, and part of the fun is trying to earn them all.

The game is available as a universal app for iPhone (and iPhone Touch) and iPad, with cloud saving so you can work on your tower on your phone and then pick up where you left off on your iPad. Tiny Tower also recently released for Android as well, so be sure to give it a try.

Tiny Wings and Toughgrind BMX were this year’s runners’ up, and are also worth looking into. Dead Space earned the spot as top iPad app, with Contre Jour HD and Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP coming in as close seconds.
