Best and Worst Games of November 2011

Best and Worst Games of November 2011

Like October, November was a great month for gamers, with big games like Uncharted 3, Skyrim, and Skyward Sword hitting shelves, not to mention PC gamers finally getting their chance to play Batman: Arkham City. You might be able to guess which game took this month’s “best critic” rating, but the top user-rated game might surprise you, not to mention which games hit the “worst” lists or didn’t make the cut for either.

*Note: We looked at all the Metacritic scores for console and portable games (excluding Android and iOS) for the previous month and picked the highest- and lowest-rated games for the month based on critic reviews and user ratings. Reviews with less than 12 total scores (user or critic) across all platforms were excluded for consideration.

Best games of November 2011 (Metacritic Rating):

  • The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – PC, PS3, 360 – Metascore: 95
  • Minecraft – PC – Metascore: 94
  • The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword – Wii – Metascore: 93
  • Batman: Arkham City – PC – Metascore: 92
  • Uncharted 3 (PS3) and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (PS3, 360) – Metascore: 91

It’s probably not surprising that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took the top spot for the month. Batman: AC made the list again this month, as it finally released for PCs, and Skyward Sword also made it as number three on the list. Uncharted 3 also snuck in, tying for fifth place with the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Scores were particularly high this month, with all five (six) titles earning scores above the 90 mark. Of course, this meant some other great titles missed the cut, like Rayman Origins and Super Mario 3D Land.

Critics have their own opinions, but some people like to judge games based on consumers’ response, so let’s take a look at what they thought.

Best Games of November 2011 (User Ratings):

  • To The Moon – PC – Average Score: 9.5
  • Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (PS3, 360), King of Fighters XIII (PS3, 360), and Serious Sam 3: BFE (PC) – Average Score: 8.9
  • Cave Story 3D – 3DS – Average Score: 8.6
  • Rayman Origins – PS3, 360, Wii – Average Score: 8.5
  • Uncharted 3 – PS3 – Average Score: 8.4

To The Moon, an indie RPG, took first place, and there was a three-way tie for second, with Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, King of Fighters XIII, and Serious Sam 3: BFE all earning 8.9 user scores. Rayman Origins, which didn’t quite make it into the top-five critic list, resonated with users, earning a number-four spot.  Only Uncharted 3 and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection appear on both lists this month. Interestingly, while critics’ scores were a bit higher on average this month, the user scores were lower than normal, for example, Skyrim and Skyward Sword both came in with 7.7 user scores, and so didn’t make it into the top-five despite being #1 and #3 on the critic list this month.

Now on to the worst games of November 2011.
