3DS Surpasses DS First Year Sales

3DS Surpasses DS First Year Sales

Let’s face it: 2011 wasn’t looking to be a good year for Nintendo.  The 3DS launch was less than epic, the company dropping the price only a few months later by nearly $100, and with major publishers like Capcom cancelling major 3DS titles due to a lack of ownership. Nintendo’s financials were looking poor, partially due to poor reception of the 3DS and partially due to increasing decline in Wii sales.

However, the 3DS price drop, and big releases like Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword seem to have helped, combined with a big Black Friday pay off, to bring Nintendo a glimmer of hope. In fact, only eight months post-release, the 3DS has apparently sold more units than the DS did in its first year (and we all know how well the DS has sold in its lifetime).

In its first year, the DS sold 2.37 million units, and the 3DS has already reached that figure. With the newly released $169.99 pink 3DS bundles and Mario Kart 7 releasing in a few days, plus dozens of shopping days until Christmas, it’s possible that the 3DS may continue to sell far beyond that amount before 2011 comes to a close.
