Community Voice: Would You Pay for A la Carte Modes?

Community Voice: Would You Pay for A la Carte Modes?

Recently, EA decided to experiment with releasing the story mode from Fight Night Champion as a standalone digital purchase for $5. Our own Eric Galaviz wondered if this might be a sign of things to come, with other games ultimately being offered as bite-sized chunks so you can choose want you want to play (and pay for) instead of purchasing the full game. Could it be possible that EA (and, presumably, other publishers who jump on board) will allow us to pay a certain amount for the game modes we want, leaving the rest on the table?

For example, if you’re like me, and you mostly play games for the single-player component, wouldn’t it be nice to pay $40 instead of $60 for only that mode? Why pay full price when you really only play part of the game? On the other hand, if you’re a multiplayer fanatic, you could pay $30 or $20 for only the multiplayer mode of the game and save money on the single-player campaign you’d never touch? What if these prices were even better, like the $5 price tag for the story mode of Fight Night? What if you could pay $5 or $10 for the modes of the game you most want to play? Would that be something you’d like to see?

Personally, if the price were right, I would definitely be tempted. Even though the multiplayer is something I don’t normally enjoy, and it’s basically dead now, I would have paid $5 or $10 for just the multiplayer mode from Dead Rising 2, because I really enjoyed that portion, but not the single player. What about you? What if you could pay only for what you wanted to play? Would you like that, or do you think the traditional full-package $60 game is better? Let us know what you think in the comments.
