PlayStation Week in Review 11/14/11

PlayStation Week in Review 11/14/11

As gamers are getting through the home stretch of blockbuster releases, PlayStation saw the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection.  It was also busy at the PlayStation Store.

Items making their way to the store this week included demos for Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One, Disney Universe, Rayman Origins and Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7.  PlayStation Plus members could also download the free PS mini Where Is My Heart?  The entire list of PlayStation Store updates can be found over that the PlayStation Blog.  You can read Vivid Gamer’s review for Disney Universe by clicking here.

PlayStation gamers moved in mass Monday night for the midnight launch of this year’s biggest game, Modern Warfare 3 and the game was met with high praise from major critics, currently holding an 88 on Metacritic.  Vivid Gamer’s current Community Voice asks gamers to tell us which shooter they prefer, Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3.

Gamers and retailers alike were not given a lot of time to rest, as the release of Skyrim followed three days later, releasing at midnight Thursday.  Skyrim has managed to garner even more praise than Call of Duty, with a Metacritic rating of 95, tying it for the third highest rated PlayStation gamer on Metacritic.

In a relatively quiet launch compared to Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was released on Tuesday alongside Modern Warfare 3.  Included in the game are HD remakes of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.  The release took place on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and copies for either system are rare.  Gamestop shipments were limited and the Limited Edition of the collection is even rarer, with the PlayStation version going for insane amounts of money on eBay.

In Uncharted 3 news, Sony took the time on Thursday to confirm that the game shipped 3.8 million units on launch day.  “Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that,” said Nick Caplin, head of communications at SCEE. “Consumers are clearly as eager to play the game as critics were to heap praise upon it, and the team at Naughty Dog deserve this fantastic reception at retail.”

While most of the biggest games of the year have just launched, Vivid Gamer will be back next week for another PlayStation Week in Review with news regarding the release of one of the final major releases this holiday, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.
