BREAKING: Steam Forums Hacked, Credit Card Info Compromised

BREAKING: Steam Forums Hacked, Credit Card Info Compromised

The Steam User Forums went down for maintenance on Sunday when hackers bypassed forum security and posted advertisements for game cheats and pornography. Now, it seems the situation is far worse. Gabe Newell, Valve Corporation head, has reportedly told Kotaku that credit card numbers and other personal information was compromised during this attack. According to Newell, credit card numbers were within a database that the hackers penetrated, but there is no evidence yet that the encryption protecting credit card numbers was dismantled:

“We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating. We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.”

Vivid Gamer advises all Steam users to immediately change their passwords and keep a close eye on credit card activity in the coming days. We will update this story as soon we know more.
