Community Voice: Your Favorite Protagonist?
On this week’s Community Voice, we’re celebrating the long-awaited release of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Naughty Dog’s third action-adventure game has garnered immense critical praise (check out our own Eric Galaviz’s review), and series star Nathan Drake is the quintessential protagonist – funny, likeable, and heroic. Other notable protagonists from this generation include Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard, Halo’s Master Chief, and Grand Theft Auto IV’s Niko Bellic.
We want to hear from you – who is your favorite video game protagonist? Personally, my vote goes to Sora of Kingdom Hearts fame. While bestowed with incredible power and responsibility, Sora’s humble attitude remains throughout his journey. He selflessly throws himself in front of danger for his friends, and strong character development takes him from timid hero to noble warrior throughout the series. However, part of his appeal as a protagonist is his vulnerability; Sora’s moments of greed or fear make him all the more believable and easy to identify with. By the time we’ve reached game’s end, the beating you give the final bosses are that much more meaningful.
These are simply my thoughts, and we’d love to hear yours. Let’s get a conversation going – sound off in the comments with who your favorite video game protagonist is. Is your pick a brutish soldier, wily thief, or totally unique archetype?
What is Community Voice? Community Voice is your weekly chance to make yourself heard on Vivid Gamer. Each week our Community Voice topic is meant to encourage discussion, not only with the staff, but with the community as well. We want to hear from readers of the site, so let us know your opinions on the topics every week, and let’s get something lively going!

Wow, this is a great topic!! Man. I don’t even know… I guess I would have to consider Professor Layton to be one of my favorites, especially after the third game (Unwound Future) where we got to learn more about him and his past…. Yeah, that’s definitely my pick for now, at least, if I’m going just for the main character, anyway. :)
Seconded! Professor Layton is an excellent protagonist. I also like how he always has everything figured out, even if it’s not readily apparent to the player, lol.
Yeah, but he’s not a dick about it, like Sherlock Holmes is. He’s just awesome.
Gordon Freeman.The use of the silent protagonist is amazing,If not the best ever(sorry zelda games,your still awesome though)He’s not some super space marine or anything,Just a Scientist with a crowbar kicking some ass!.
Kratos! How can you not enjoy a guy who kills mercilessly, then develops a conscience after unwittingly killing his wife and child and being permanently covered in their ashes? Gods? Immortals? Pfft, we’ll see about that.
Thanks for the contest! (@secretclean)
Duke Nukem, he has the kick-ass, care-free attitude that all men want to have. He has never changed other than going from 2D side scroller to 3D world adventurer so he has only improved. I mean the developers did take forever to release a pretty standard first person shooter but that’s not Duke’s fault. Duke was doing what he does best all that time he was waiting for the release (yes…. women). And his alpha male don’t-take-shit-from-anyone-and-use-as-many-hyphens-as-you-want attitude is why he is my all time favorite protagonist.
Would have to be Sonic. Simply because he was the one that got me addicted to games back in the day.
Favorite Protagonist? It may sound like a cop-out, Nathan Drake. Sure he may look like 10 other popular characters, but his cavalier attitude towards danger combined with his uncanny ability to persevere is spectacular. He is the Indiana Jones of this generation (even though Indiana Jones is the Indie of EVERY generation) and deserves a spot among the best treasure hunters of all time. I like that he tries to never leave somebody behind (even if they are a camera man)….all while he is in your vault, raidin’ your treasures!
@dyeknom
Jill Valentine. She can hold her own against zombies and she’s the master of unlocking!
ezio auditore
Nathan Drake. Just a great character.
The Prince of Persia from the sands of time trilogy, he was a boy in the first game who matured to be a man over the course of the three games, as he realized sometime you must stop running, and face adversity head on.
Nathan Drake he’s similar to Lupin the 3rd and even though their thieves and treasures hunters but when the world is in danger they’ll go through hell to save it and no one will ever know they did.
@Miktheking75
I really enjoyed Raziel from Soul Reaver as a protagonist. The credit definitely goes to Amy Hennig, writer of the series (as well as the Uncharted series). She can write the hell out of some dialogue. The conflict between Raziel and Kain, the story revolving around them and the resolution are completely unmatched in gaming.
PAC-MAN!!!! He eats his way out of trouble and he is not afraid of no ghost.
Vivi from Final Fantasy IX (9). His character is one of the few I have seen in any Final Fantasy game, or any game for that matter, that had such an emotional tug at your heart throughout his journey. The way he grew from being gullible and clumsy in the begging to really finding his own footing and beliefs toward the end. The nice comedic moments with him between the heavy story of his was paced well. One more note, when they discovered the mage village, was a moment I will not forget. @chrishfr
Ryo Hazuki from Shenmue, because when he’s not out looking for sailors or playing Lucky Hit, he’s punching dudes in the face and being a jerk to women. He’s one smooth dude!
The Bard from the most recent Bard’s Tale game. Reason? Cary Elwes, need I say more? No, but I will. Cary Elwes is one of the funniest actors ever and he not only ad libbed, but he wrote all the bard’s dialog for the entire game. That gives you one of the funniest, most likable, and best acted characters ever in a game. Hopefully someday this game will receive a sequel with Mr. Elwes reprising his role.
Samus Aran.Back in the 80′s there weren’t any girls who were the main protagonist there were only ditzy girls getting themselves captured over and over and needing to be rescued!!.Then came along Metroid.I will never forget when I figured out that “omg he is actually a she!!!”..It warmed my heart seeing a girl kick ass in a video game and NOT need help or to be rescued.I will always love metroid and Samus forver <3 <3 <3 @Nikibaby219
The hero from Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favorite protagonists. He doesn’t say a thing, but his heroic and selfless actions end up saying everything you need to know about his character.
So, I’m going to take this back to the video game that got me hooked on rpgs. I’m going to have to say Ness from Earthbound. That kid ruled. He’s the strong silent type with psychic powers, he loves baseball, and saves the world. Awesome.
Link. He’s brave, humble and skilled with almost any weapon.
The recent Fallout protagonist. Mainly because he/she is or at least can be an extension of yourself. They can be easily relatable because they can be of your ethnic background or gender. The protagonist can be kind or cruel depending on your current mood or reaction to in game events. Mission goals can achieved through physical violence or diplomatic conversations and wit. The Fallout protagonist can be as humble, obnoxious, insane, humorous or charming as you want him/her to be.
Nathan Drake. Such a great, well-written character.
My favorite would be Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Series. One of my favorite games is the original MGS that came out for the PS1 and it blew my mind. Solid Snake is one of my favorites since he has his faults but is still a great character and always get the job done, and he’s funny sometimes too.
My favorite hero is Mario. He is cult and grow up with him. He is a simple plummer but with the most heroic heart chasing after the princes. He has many friends and liked by many. I mean a plummer winning a princess heart means he is a real ladies man to.
Absolute cult and a man really deserving the titel Hero!
Marche from Final Fantasy Tactics because his goal is simply to run around this imaginary world and destroy what was created by his friends. It’s such an odd little dilemma to put yourself through as the killer of fun for the purpose of escaping fantasy.
Balthier of Final Fantasy XII. He’s a sky pirate out to save the world!
Commander Shepard, because he/she can be what you make him/her to be. At his best he/she is an ideal at his worse he/she is a what the universe needs at that moment, some one that can and will make the hard choices for the greater good.
@mysticfail
My favorite would have to be Kaim Argonar from Lost Odyssey. It was interesting reading through the 1000 years of memories, especially since they mostly revolved around his experiences of living for a very long time. Also, his desire to have his old life back is much more genuine that other protagonists’ motivations.
Wander from Shadow of the Colossus. Epic struggle + unflagging determination. Not to mention Agro and his sick glowing pancho
Ezio from Assassin’s Creed because of his awesome parkour, stealth, combat, and lady-getting skills. Everything we like to see in a protagonist
Solid Snake has stood the test of time for me and is still my favorite.
Garrett from Thief because he sucks at combat so he makes up for it with his skills in the shadows. Snake is a close second. I guess I just really like stealth games.
Alan Wake.
Mostly because there are so many mysteries surrounding him during the story that he can’t even answer.
This is a tough one, but I think my favorite would be Link, Sev (Killzone 3), or Manny (Grim Fandango). Good topic though. I’ve played a lot of games, so its hard to remember the most memorable ones sadly. Thanks for the contest!
Nathan Drake, I like the smart, funny, slightly roguish heroes. If it was from film the my vote would go to Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds.
Hard choice. I guess Shepard from Mass Effect just becuase you have a great amount of control over how he acts.
Hard choice…..I would probably say Dante from Devil May Cry. He’s a bad-ass, has a funny sense of humor, and is just all around awesome =D
Possibly Kazuma Kiryu from the Yakuza series. The guy is a bad-ass, but not completely over the top, and has time for a round of golf or a few minutes in the batting cage.
Gordon Freeman no question about it.
He doesn’t have to say anything when he’s beating down the enemies face with his vaunted crowbar.
Sackboy is my favorite protagonist. You can literally build any kind of challenge/enemy and he will go attempt to conquer it without any hesitation. Not only that, he is one of the coolest video game characters ever made/sewn.
DK- Donkey Kong. He’s cool because he’s a role model and easy to relate to. Some background info.
When DK was still young he moved to the city for a construction job. He was young, impressionable, eager, and hard working plus he was a bit of a player; reminds me of myself really. He met this pretty girl, think her name was Pauline. People will tell you differently, but here’s what really happened. DK asked her on a date. She said no but he didn’t speak the language so he thought she said yes. He decided to take her to the top of his construction job because it’s the best spot to see the whole city; romantic right? DK’s someone you can get great dating advice from. Anyway things were going well until some plumber dude came along. He was player hating big time and was trying to break up the date. Wouldn’t take no for an answer so DK threw some barrels to make him go away. They got into a fight which brought the whole construction site down.
After that misunderstanding (DK got fired) Donkey Kong had to move back home with his dad (a cranky old dude). DK had his buddy Diddy to hang with so it wasn’t so bad. Some reptilian punks moved onto the island and took it over. DK didn’t care as long as they left him alone. His motto is you don’t mess with me and I won’t mess with you. See, it’s a motto everyone should follow; works well enough for me. Anyway these Kremlin punks took DK’s stash of bananas. DK went all apelike and whooped all kinda reptilian behind and got his banana stash back. Now personally I prefer mangos but I can relate. If someone took all my mango Gatorades I’d go ape and whoop the thieves behind too! (if diplomacy failed
)
DK is a man of many talents much like me. He’s a world class racecar driver, musician, tennis player, soccer star, baseball player, and Olympic champion. I can relate because like DK I also drive, I like music, I’ve played tennis (twice), played soccer when I was younger, played a couple games of catch and participated in the Olympics (by yelling go USA from the living room couch). He also likes to throw huge parties with his friends. Who doesn’t like hanging out and partying with friends? He also helps with clean up (Cleaning up after parties is hard work and DK’s done 8 so far!). DK doesn’t hold grudges. He even made peace with that player hating plumber. They’re good friends now. From DK’s example I learned not to hold grudges and to make peace with my enemies.
As you’ve now learned DK is an everyman, someone all people can relate too. Hopefully this has made a few converts from some of you.
My favorite character would have to be John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. It’s his mix of badassery combined with his wit and caring for his family that really makes me love his character. Some video games are hard to play because the character is unlikable, but in Marston’s case I think that he made me further invested in the story.
Ezio Auditore da Firenze. His story is interesting. He became what he was after tragedy and was able to rise further. Ezio is an excellent climber and assassin, very brutal and cunning. Much better than Altair.
I have to go with Dante, more specifcally dmc 3 dante. His devil may care atitude and his pure sense of style make for one of the funnest ( yeah funnest….ha) character I’ve ever encountered in a game
I’m sure it has already been said, but Solid Snake/Big Boss deserve a mention. He’s my favorite protagonist because throughout the entire MGS series he just constantly gets screwed over. No matter what he did things always ended badly for him. BUT HE WAS STILL A TROOPER!
Donkey Kong. I grew up with him playing Donkey Kong Country relentlessly, and he always seemed like a fun character. :shakes head: If only it weren’t for the horrific emotional trauma caused to his family by Mario.
My favorite and most memorable protagonist is actually from a game I’ve never finished.
From Tales Of the Abyss his name is “Luke fon Fabre”
It was the first actual experience where there was a actual progression of character in the game I was playing.
Every other game just throws you into a situation without second guessing, but in this game, i felt like the character actually had thoughts and feelings. He struggled with the morality of fighting to survive and living with the situation he was in.
Sly Cooper is my favorite. He got me into stealth type games. Sly also has a cool personality.
Thieves in Time FTW
I can’t wait! Even though Sucker Punch isn’t making it, I have faith it will still be great.
Klayman from skull monkeys. As a kid, I played the hell out of this game. And Klayman had always made me laugh. I swear, for never speaking he was pretty funny.
Anywho, with all his neat abilities he has earned a high spot in my favorite video game characters.
Megaman! Because every game every single time he has to defeat those 8 robots. Never changes, he just keeps fighting. And the thing is he could probably stop for sometime if he just KILLED DR. WILY!! But alas, he can’t, because it’s either part of his programming, or he just personally loves the challenge :P
Love your tag.
Really love Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed, he’s got a lot of character and attitude, and his voice makes no question that he’s serious. :)
Unless you pan to physically travel to China and check out the manufacturer, you
are able to produce cheap women’s profit suits and also dresses.
