MechWarrior Online Free-To-Play

MechWarrior Online Free-To-Play

Piranha Games has announced that a title that began development in 2008 and was thought dead, is actually still in development as the free-to-play title MechWarrior Online.  According to the teaser poster, the game is set to release in the summer of 2012.

In an interview with IGN in 2009, game designer Jordan Weisman and Piranha Games co-founder Russ Bullock described the game as a complete re-launch of the series, to give newer fans without much experience in the MechWarrior series a chance of understanding the story.  Weisman said, “the story starts just as Hanse Davion comes to power, so it is just, as you said, at the end of the Third, right at the beginning of what will become the Fourth Succession War.”  The official press release now indicates that the setting has changed slightly from the one indicated in the 2009 interview, now taking place in 3049 as opposed to 3015.

It is unclear just how much has changed from the original goal of MechWarrior since 2009 apart from the dates, but as Weisman said, “nothing is ever as satisfying as unleashing the kind of firepower that only a mech contains and watching it ravage your target.”  While long development schedules are almost never a good sign, the world would be better sans Duke Nukem: Forever, there may be some juice left in that BattleMech’s engine, especially as a free-to-play title.

The title will be exclusive to the PC.
