Rumor: Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Coming November 25

Rumor: Xbox 360 Dashboard Update Coming November 25

According to Gigaom, Microsoft will be “targeting a Black Friday release of the Xbox Live update.” Their sources indicate that the dashboard update could be coming out on November 25, but thanks to an interview on the Seattle Times we do know an update will be releasing sometime in November.

The Seattle Times interviewed Andy Lees, President of Microsoft’s Windows Phone division. In the interview he was asked if “this would be the breakout year” for the Windows Phone. In his response he states that the Xbox update will be coming in November:

Q: Is this going to be your breakout year, do you think?

A: A few things: The Xbox will be updated in November. The UI (user interface) is very similar (to Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows 8) with the tiles and panoramas.

In the Gigaom report, their sources indicated a late November release and also mentioned that the apps included in the update will be based on Silverlight. Codenamed “Lakeview”, the new tech features the ability to easily build Internet-connected applications which Silverlight is known for, but adds Kinect voice recognition and gesture control. Video playback will be based on Apple’s H.264 HTTP Live Streaming technology rather than Microsoft’s own Smooth Streaming. Gigaom suggests that Microsoft wants to use this new tech to third party developers who can build apps for the Xbox 360 and not necessarily just games.

Microsoft has yet to issue an official release date for the new Xbox 360 update, but gamers definitely seem excited about the dashboard changes, not only for the Kinect support but also for the new Television apps. Stay tuned as we will update you as soon as we hear more from Microsoft.
