Best and Worst Games of September 2011
September marked the beginning of the “Fall Rush.” Two excellent sports titles hit the market, a few popular HD remakes also released, and of course, we had the battle of the “3’s” with Gears of War 3 and Resistance 3 both releasing last month. September had more games getting a score of 80 or above than in previous months. There were so many highly rated titles that more than five titles just missed the cut. September was also a good month for the 3DS, which hasn’t seen so many popular titles since its release. Let’s check out the best and worst games for the month of September.
*Note: We looked at all the Metacritic scores for console and portable games (excluding Android and iOS) for the previous month and picked the highest- and lowest-rated games for the month based on critic reviews and user ratings.
Best games of September 2011 (Metacritic Rating):
- FIFA 12 – PC, Xbox 360, PS3 – Meta Score: 91
- Gears of War 3 – Xbox 360 – Meta Score: 91
- ICO & Shadow of Colossus HD Collection – PS3 – Meta Score: 91
- NHL 12- Xbox 360, PS3 – Meta Score: 87
- Kirby Mass Attack - DS – Meta Score: 85
FIFA Soccer 12, Gears of War 3 and ICO & Shadow of Colossus Collection all had a Meta Score of 91, making a three-way tie for the month’s highest-rated game. While Gears of War 3 sold three million copies in its first week, FIFA 12 received high praise across all platforms, and one can argue that its success across multiple consoles makes FIFA the best game of the month. The ICO collection rounds out the three-way tie; while a remake, it’s still one of September’s best titles, and showed that both games can still hold their own in the current generation. The NHL franchise continues to shine, even without any competition. Finally, a DS title makes the list, with Kirby Mass Attack. Some of the titles that just barely missed the cut, with scores above 80 were: God of War Origins, F1 2011, Resistance 3, Driver, Star Fox 64 3D, and Bit.Trip Complete. My personal favorite for the month is definitely FIFA 12, but as you can see, there were a ton of highly rated titles last month.
Critics have their own opinions, but some people like to judge games based on consumers’ response, so let’s take a look at what they thought this past month.
Best Games of September 2011 (User Ratings):
- F1 2011- PC- Average Score: 8.6
- Rock of Ages - Xbox 360, PC – Average Score: 8.5
- The Gunstringer – Xbox 360 Kinect – Average Score: 8.3
- God of War Origins Collection – PS3 – Average Score: 8.2
- Rise of Nightmares – Xbox 360 Kinect – Average Score: 8.1
Surprisingly, none of this month’s top critic picks made it onto the list. Some of this month’s top games like Gears, FIFA and NHL all had user ratings in the 7.4-7.9 range. It’s also surprising to see two Kinect titles that weren’t well received by critics on the list. This discrepancy is either because critics are more cynical when it comes to Kinect games, or the lack of options means gamers will be happy with anything that’s half-way decent. Definitely the unanimous favorite among critics and gamers are F1 2011 and God of War Origins.
Now on to the worst games of September 2011.
