Resistance 3 Review
Insomniac did what almost no development team does with a franchise when it killed main character Nathan Hale. It has been done before, but killing Hale is the equivalent of Epic killing Marcus Fenix in Gears of War, which has not been done. In development for three years, Resistance 3 shows that it is in a gamer’s best interest not have a new iteration every year.
Resistance 3‘s story focuses on Joseph Capelli, a former Sentinel who was discharged from service four years ago, when Resistance 2‘s story ends. After his discharge, he spends the next four years starting a family and hiding from Chimeran scouts with fellow hideouts. While Capelli is attempting to live as normal a life as possible, the war has left 90% of the human population dead. Shortly after the game starts, Chimeran scouts discover the makeshift town he calls home and Capelli is forced back into the fight. Throughout Resistance 3, Capelli is unsure whether he or his family will make it out alive.
The game’s story is one of the stronger points, and Insomniac has noticeably dialed the scale of Resistance 3 back. While you could argue that there has always been the one main character, you cannot argue the scale of the bigger picture. Resistance 1 and 2 dealt with armies. R3 tightens the scale of the game so it is genuinely about the well being of one man and his efforts to accomplish one task. There is no aid from the Army, just Capelli and a small band of resistance fighters. Insomniac also experimented with fighting not only between the Chimera and humans, but also with the inner conflicts between what is left of the human race, and this makes for a very nice change of pace.
Capelli’s journey has him traveling East, from Texas to New York, and is divided into 20 playable chapters that could take anywhere from eight to ten hours to complete. Resistance 3′s single-player story is lengthy compared to other first-person shooters, and offers several inducements for replay, whether it be collecting all of the journals and audio books, or upgrading all of your weapons. Factoring replays in, you could spend another ten hours on the single-player element alone. If you choose to stay offline, you can still play with friends through split-screen cooperative play.
Throughout the campaign there is a wide-array of weapons to use, and Insomniac has decided to let players carry an unbelievable amount of heat. At no point in this game did I have to decide if I wanted one particular gun instead of another. You have the inventory space to carry anything you find. The game contains four different types of grenades: EMPs, Hedgehogs, Molotov Cocktails and shrapnel grenades. I can see the Cryogun and sledgehammer quickly becoming fan favorites throughout the single-player campaign and watching the Mutator do its job is disgustingly satisfying. Gamers can still find some of the classic weapons to continue the resistance, with the Bullseye, M5A2 Folsom Carbine and Marksman all back for more. A few more weapons you will be able to find are the classic Rossmore shotgun, the new Atomizer, the Chimeran rocket system Wildfire, the HE .44 Magnum, and the Deadeye. Thankfully, these weapons provide enough variety to keep the kills fresh.
Picking up green canisters will help Capelli stay alive when the hordes are attacking, and Resistance 3 offers very little down time. The Chimera have undergone a little bit of a change as well, with some enemies now carrying atomizers with shields, which can make an already difficult swarm that much more challenging not only on your skill level, but also on your ammunition count as well. Careful use of weapons is essential in the latter half of the game, as you can run out of ammunition quickly.
If this seems like it could be a problem for you, Insomniac has incorporated cheat codes, which are unlocked with reward points you gain from playing through the single player. The cheat codes will allow players to have everything from unlimited ammo to playing a completely mirrored video game.
