Best and Worst Games of August 2011
After a few slow months we are finally getting into the big AAA titles that we see towards the end of every year. The month of August wasn’t too impressive, with the biggest game coming out at the end of the month, but it was a big one. Dues Ex: Human Revolution was definitely one of the best games of the month, but some downloadable titles also made the best of list. On the worst list we see some pretty bad PC games; users seemed to have plenty of issues with buggy games this month. Let’s take a look at the best and worst games for the month of August 2011.
*Note: We looked at all the Metacritic scores for console and portable games (excluding Android and iOS) for the previous month and picked the highest- and lowest-rated games for the month based on critic reviews and user ratings.
Best games of August 2011 (Metacritic Rating):
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution - PC, Xbox 360, PS3 – Meta Score: 89
- Bastion – PC – Meta Score: 89
- Limbo – PC – Meta Score: 88
- Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition - Xbox 360, PS3 – Meta Score: 87
- Toy Soldiers: Cold War – Xbox 360 – Meta Score: 81
Deus Ex: Human Revolution impressed fans and critics alike, and there is no doubt it is the best game in August. However, you can’t count out the highly popular downloadble titles: Limbo and Bastion. Getting a later PC release, both games released in August, and critics enjoyed these games as much on PC as they did on consoles. A few other downloadble titles round up the top five, with Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition and Toy Soldiers: Cold War. While we’ll see Street Fighter later on, the strength of downloadble titles in the past few months continues while there is a shortage of quality retail games. Interestingly, one of the other biggest titles, Madden NFL 12, just barely missed the list, as it is currently fluctuating between 80 and 79 as reviews continue to trickle in.
Critics have their own opinions, but some people like to judge games based on consumers’ response, so let’s take a look at what they thought.
Best Games of August 2011 (User Ratings):
- Bastion – PC – Average Score: 9.0
- Toy Soldiers: Cold War – Xbox 360 – Average Score: 8.8
- Space Pirates and Zombies – PC – Average Score: 8.8
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution - PC, Xbox 360, PS3 – Average Score: 8.7
- Limbo – PS3 – Average Score: 8.3
As you can see, users this month seem to coincide with critics’ opinions, with four of the five games also appearing on the user best games list. However, Bastion and Toy Soldiers top the list, with Space Pirates and Zombies being the only game to not show up on the critics’ list.
Now on to the worst games of August 2011.

From what I saw a lot of people rated From Dust so awful because PC got it after Xbox or some other such squabble. PC gamers… disgusting…
I think a lot of it had to do with the DRM issues also, since Ubisoft was kind of slimy about it.
It’s not SIMPLY because of getting the later than consoles. It’s because the end product wasn’t worth the wait. Batman Arkham Asylum PC was released a month after the console versions and yet it got rave reviews and sales. And the developer delivers. Nice controls on the PC, it runs well, good DRM – Batman AA deserved the PC gamer’s attention.
From Dust was late for a month but in the end it wasn’t worth the wait. Who would make game on the PC without the advanced graphics options to tinker around or lock the frame rate to 30? As for the online DRM, the PC gamers are pissed for being lied to. Even in the early months of the game’s announcement there was too much speculation and uncertainties on what kind of DRM it’s going to use, especially when Ubisoft seemed to be ditcheing the oprresive DRM. When it that DRM was chose the PC gamers boycotted it. Ubisoft backed down and promised for a one time only activation after instal. Did they keep that promised that?
Hell NO. They still have to log on to the servers before starting the game. PC gamers were lied to. No one likes to be lied to. Even the no online patch in a week’s time won’t do any good since the PC gamers are pissed to the core. That is even if Ubisoft isn’t lying about the patch.
I AM SHOCKED how quickly Bodycount hit subpar. I thought it would have done a been a better. I however do not get Street Fighter III. Some of the choices (glitches?) like being unable to select the number of rounds sucks, but come on! The game plays perfectly besides minor settings and some user favorable glitches. The fact that these are all user related makes me wonder if it’s over being a capcom title over being bad. MW2 didnt even have an encrypted gamesave and people seem to agree thats an 8?
From Dust was a disappointment. Nothing disgusting about having the best hardware Prof.
Okay, okay, you’ve convinced me. I don’t like being lied to either, and i’m sure bad drm’s are bad…… Whatever they are.
Dynamic Right Managements (I believe that’s what it stands for… might be something extremely similar) either or they’re a crazy idea someone stupid came up with. The whole concept is to prevent piracy by tacking on something extra. In the case of From Dust I believe you need to be online to use it. (they check it when you go on or something along those lines) The big problem with DRM’s isn’t the hassle, but the end result. They’re designed around stopping pirates, but when they’re editing games anyways… well they can play From Dust for FREE and OFFLINE. It’s hard to support/understand a system where the free product is better than the paid product.
heumph…….. weird.
Does the PC version of Deus Ex: HR feature any notable DRM? I wouldn’t know, played and reviewed on PS3.
I wouldn’t know, considering I just learned the term yesterday, and don’t own it anyway. By the way, what’s your second screenshot of? Also, do you know how I’m supposed to get my hands on a picture to go with my posts? I’m feeling kind of left out here.
I really need to stop replying to ya XD… but anyways I’m 99% sure that’s Bastion. As far as “feeling kind of left out” most people who have one are also writers here. Like everyone in this post that has a special avatar is a writer here.
To actually get one simply head to Gravatar. While there set up the email you use to post here and the site should send it over.
Actually I believe you should be able to go into your profile and upload an image for your avatar.
Thanks. And since DEHR managed to avoided placing alongside FD it’s probably in the clear for DRM. Besides at this rate I should even understand the lingo within a week or so right?
I wouldn’t call it lingo per-say. DRM for instance appears in movies, TV, applications, music and was a huge thing people had against iTunes for a while. Gaming lacks a lot of lingo and what we do have is rare/underused. For instance some shooting games have “bullet drop” which is a term for the game emulating the affects of gravity on the object. This is rarely mentioned, but more importantly is rarely noticed. The only times it’s really apparent is when snipers are popular (because its easier to shoot straight over adjusting) or shotguners. Just a small random factoid. I would say to get MOST of the terms it could take in the upwards of a year. Either or you don’t really need to know the lingo to communicate here/anywhere. Most things are extremely straight forward.
Underused is just fine with me. :D
Testing….
Didn’t work. :(
No, It Did!!!!!!!!!! You will fear my paper giraffe!!!!!!!!!! Awesome.
Which method worked? Mine or Eric’s? I am quite sure his wouldn’t work, so it would be great for future reference. That is in the event he was correct.
I went over to gravatar and uploaded a photo to my email/account and it synched it in a minute or so. Which would be your method I guess. (Between you and me, i’m not even really sure what his method is.) Also, you should probably post that somewhere. Just sayin. :D
In theory since I don’t think theres a link on site… there is a way to become a “member”. This will entitle you to some perks like not having to type in information to post. logically speaking if you knew the url you could join. I don’t know any of that information as I’m only an editor. On this page at least in the past, you could upload an avatar. I believe most people have done away with this for Gravatar. Less work for coding, makes the site look nicer, less work on the poster, etc.
Not that any of this matters, but I am glad to see you got it working!
As far as posting that. Well it would look tacky/out of place on a site like this and a post about it would get lost over time. In the end it would make very little sense and simple answers come fast if you ask.
I wasn’t thinking a post, I was thinking a link or something beside the comment.
