GamesCom 2011: PS3 Gets Price Drop

GamesCom 2011: PS3 Gets Price Drop

At Sony’s GamesCom 2011 press conference earlier this morning, a bomb was dropped on attendees and those watching from home. Sony Europe CEO Andrew House announced that the PlayStation 3 will receive a price drop in all territories effective immediately. The 160 GB console, which previously retailed for $299, will now cost $249 while the 320 GB will retail for $299. Jack Tretton, President & CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has this to say on the breaking news:

As many of you know, it has been nearly five years since the PS3 first came to the U.S. market with its built in Blu-ray player, integrated hard-drive, built-in wireless, and unmatched hi-def gaming. Today, more than 50 million PS3’s have been sold worldwide, more than 2,495 Blu-ray titles are available and the PS3’s expansive portfolio of games and video content on PlayStation Network exceeds 60,000 titles. While others in the space are losing steam, PlayStation 3 is gaining momentum and giving gamers everywhere more of what they want: an unparalleled line-up of exclusive games and access to the best in sports, movies and TV, all at a great value. Today, I believe that value becomes even more evident . . . We take our commitment to the millions of PlayStation fans out there very seriously. We don’t just want you to be part of the PlayStation Nation, we want you to be proud to be a PS3 owner.

Tretton also confirmed that an inFAMOUS 2 bundle would be coming to stores along with the price drop. The bundle includes a 320 GB PlayStation 3, a copy of inFAMOUS 2, and a 30-day PlayStation Plus membership for only $299. This is excellent news for hesitant PS3 owners. For the same price as the system, you can add an excellent Sony exclusive and a brief trial of PlayStation Plus. It may take a few days for the price drop to appear at certain retail outlets, but soon gamers will be able to get their hands on Sony’s high-def system for cheaper than ever.

Is the PS3 price drop enough to sell the system for you? Are you excited about the inFAMOUS 2 bundle? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to Vivid Gamer for more news from GamesCom 2011.
