PlayStation 3.70 Update Out Now

PlayStation 3.70 Update Out Now

Earlier today Sony announced a new firmware update coming to the PS3, update 3.70, but didn’t say when the update would go live. Well it looks like it went live tonight. I turned on my PS3 in hopes of finding people to play Resistance 3 with and was prompted to download the 3.70 update. The hefty update brings a few added Automatic Download features, some XMB changes and updates to 3D Blu-Ray features.

For those without a PlayStation Plus account, Automatic Download is a feature that lets users set a timeframe for your PS3 to download patches to games you recently played, system updates, game demos every now and then, and it will also install any downloads that are ready to be installed onto the harddrive. With update 3.70 the Automatic Download feature will now be called “Automatic Update” and will include two new features:

  • A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data. Under (Game), select the game for which you want to automatically upload saved data, and then press the Triangle button.
  • Also, Trophies will now sync automatically at the timing of Auto Download.

I am a huge fan of the auto download feature simply because I no longer have to wait for a patch to download and install for my games. With the new auto save function and the auto sync for trophies I no longer have to keep saving my games to cloud server and I don’t have to manually sync to compare trophies. This is something I really like about XBL because you can simply pull up anyone on your friends list and quickly look at their trophies without having to wait for the sync, which PS3 gamers know can take a long itme.

A few minor changes to the XMB were also included in the 3.70 update. The new category called TV/Video Services has been added which will accommodate video apps such as Netflix and Hulu. Below are the full details:

  • You’ll be able to find and download all of the video applications available on PS3 directly from this new XMB category.
  • A folder labeled “My Channels” within this category will allow you to easily access your downloaded applications.
  • Any videos downloaded from the PlayStation store will continue to be placed in the existing Video category on the XMB

Finally two updates for those who have 3D TV’s and use your PS3 to watch 3D movies:

  • 3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
  • DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
  • 3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.

The 3.70 is available now and depending on your connection it could take you anywhere from 10-20 mins to download and install. Of course you can start the process and have the system automatically shutdown when it is done. If you plan on playing Resistance 3 MP Beta tomorrow I would strongly suggest to download the system update now so you can download the patch for R3 tomorrow as soon as it goes live. Additional details will be available for the firmware update can be found here you can also download and install the update via USB from that site.
