Sony Buys Sucker Punch Productions

Sony Buys Sucker Punch Productions

Today, Sony announced that it has purchased Sucker Punch Productions ensuring that all future games developed by the experienced studio will release exclusively on Sony platforms. An official statement from Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios confirms that Sucker Punch Productions is the sixteenth studio to join the company. Sucker Punch is well known for their work on the hit Sly Cooper franchise, which enjoyed immense success on the PlayStation 2. More recently, the studio is known for the PlayStation 3 exclusives inFamous and inFamous 2. Both games were very well-received by gamers and critics alike, and are generally considered among the best in Sony’s lineup of exclusives.

On the purchase and their longstanding relationship with Sony, Brian Fleming managing partner for Sucker Punch, stated, “. . . [they've] allowed us to combine our creative design capabilities with their guidance to make some of the best franchises to hit the PlayStation platforms. Equally important, the relationship with [Sony] has provided us the flexibility and trust to take creative risks and invent new properties.” Chris Zimmerman of Sucker Punch echoed these thoughts in an interview with GameSpot:

I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of change . . . We’ve really worked hard to make high-quality games; games that are critically successful and games that are popular with consumers. And Sony’s been a super partner for us in that. They’ve really been supportive of us and the things we’ve wanted to do in our games and helped us grow as a studio in the past dozen years. They’ve helped us see where we needed to improve. And I think that’s going to continue moving forward. I think the pressure that we have to do great games more than anything else comes internally. We’re really excited about doing games, we’re excited about doing great games, and we put a lot of pressure on ourselves, so that’s not going to change.

Zimmerman also hinted that the studio is “hard at work” on a game that could see a release for PlayStation Vita, though no concrete details were given.

Sony’s acquisition of Sucker Punch Productions is exciting news for PlayStation fans; with direct support and feedback from the publisher the inFamous devs can continue to focus their efforts on high-quality games designed to make full use of PlayStation hardware, a trait often absent from third-party games. After the jarring conclusion of inFamous 2, I’m very excited to see where Sucker Punch takes their superhero sandbox franchise and what new IP may be on the horizon. If you’re a fan of Sly Cooper, you’ve also got much to look forward to when Sanzaru Games releases Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time next year.
