Best and Worst Games of July 2011

Best and Worst Games of July 2011

July is notorious for being a slow month in the gaming industry and this year was no different. There weren’t the big AAA titles that we saw last month but that doesn’t mean there weren’t any good games to play this month. Let’s take a look at which games were the best and the worst for the month of July 2011.

Catherine was a hit along with Limbo and it seems like this month the Xbox Live Arcade games really stepped it up with titles like Bastion. But there were some pretty dismal games that released this month like Ape Escape and Call of Juarez: The Cartel. This month was also a rough month from gamers’ perspective with most users rating games under in the eight. Just like last month we looked at all the Metacritic scores for console and portable games (excluding Android and iOS) for the month of July 2011 and picked the highest- and lowest-rated games for the month based on critic reviews and user ratings.

Best games of July 2011 (Metacritic Rating):

  • Limbo – PS3 Meta Score: 91
  • Bastion – Xbox 360 Meta Score: 88
  • Ms. ‘Splosion Man- Xbox 360 Meta Score: 84
  • Catherine- PS3, Xbox 360 Meta Score: 82
  • NCAA Football 12- PS3, Xbox 360 Meta Score: 81
  • Dungeons of Dredmor - PC Meta Score: 81

This month was definitely the month of the downloadable arcade titles. Limbo, Bastion and Ms. ‘Splosion Man are all arcade titles and two of those three are exclusive to XBLA. Just missing the cut was From Dust, also on Xbox Live, which as of now sits at 79. This past month was a very strong showing for the Summer of Arcade titles. NCAA makes its yearly appearance and received generally good reviews but not so much from gamers. Finally Catherine was the fourth highest rated title of the month, itt’s unique gameplay and storyline has generally been well received by critics however users are still finding it to be a very difficult game.

While critics have their own opinions, some people like to judge games based on consumers’ response, so let’s take a look at what they thought.

Best Games of July 2011 (User Ratings):

  • Dungeons of Dredmor – PC Average Score: 9.2
  • Limbo – PS3 Average Score: 9.1
  • Fallout: New Vegas- Old World Blues DLC- Xbox 360, PC, PS3 Average Score: 8.7
  • Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon – Xbox 360 Average Score: 8.5
  • Bastion – Xbox 360 Average Score: 8.5

Critic ratings don’t always coincide with user/gamers ratings but this month three of the six top rated titles (by critics) made the top picks from users. Limbo again scoring high among the gaming community and Dungeons of Dredmor seems to be a big hit with gamers as well. Also interesting to note is the Fallout: New Vegas DLC. We usually don’t include DLC with the top picks but gamers seem to really like the newest Fallout addition even though it is receiving a mixed response among critics. And then you have Earth Defense Force, a game that is sitting at a cool 68 based on critic reviews but users really like this game with the average score coming out to 8.5. It’s interesting to see the one game that critics don’t like but users do, however this month most user ratings fell below 8.0 even for titles that were well received by critics. For example Catherine is a full point lower than critic ratings.

Now on to the worst games of July 2011.
