Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Mode Speculation Resurface

Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Mode Speculation Resurface

Some might remember rumors of a Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mode surfaced during E3 and while no one at BioWare clearly stated that there will or won’t be a multiplayer mode, rumors are resurfacing thanks to a little tweet about upcoming demo news.

The tweet is in response to someone just hoping for a little demo news but what has people buzzing is how early we are hearing about a demo. Demos are usually out much closer to release date and with Mass Effect 3 set to release in March 2012 some are wondering if this news of a demo is actually going to be news of a beta.

Betas are usually released months before the game’s release date and with news of a demo coming in just a few months some think this could be the heavily rumored horde or co-op mode. It’s not unheard of for a traditionally single player franchise to turn to a co-op mode at some point and while this is usually looked down upon by gamers not all franchises fail when creating a new multiplayer experience; you only have to look at Uncharted as an example of this. However there are enough games out there that failed at a multiplayer attempt to cause some people to be worried.

BioWare has certainly thought about bringing a multiplayer experience to the Mass Effect universe but no one has officially said they were bringing a multiplayer mode to Mass Effect 3. At the same time no one has come out and clearly said they weren’t further fueling the speculation.

Here is just a bit of the rumor reports from the NeoGaf forums:

Update 3:

CVG actually claims they’re co-op missions instead of horde mode, but as a warning, CVG’s sources are all kinds of horrid:http://www.computerandvideogames.com…line-missions/

A reliable development source has since informed CVG that the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer feature will be built around “original missions made for online”, which will be totally unique from the solo campaign.

Our mole added there would “only be a handful” of co-op missions which have been created with the intention of being “played and played again”.

Reports have suggested that the online offering will come in the form of a Horde-style mode, but our source was quick to play down the notion

Update 4:

Looking back, BioWare never actually said there was no multiplayer. That was Game Informer’s interpretation of Casey’s vague statement.

But obviously, multiplayer is something we want to do more of in the future as a company”.

It should be mentioned that it isn’t unheard of for a demo to come out months before a game’s release date. Resistance 3 recently included a demo of their single player campaign with the release of Battle L.A. and that was released last month while the retail release is set for September. With the news of a demo release is a few months away, BioWare could be setting themselves for the same time table with releasing a demo before the end of the year.

I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out what BioWare has in stored for us in the coming months but I’m sure we’ll hear something more concrete about a co-op/multiplayer mode sooner than we hear about the demo news. At least one thing is clear, we should be hearing about a Mass Effect 3 demo in the coming months. Stay tuned as we’ll keep you posted about the ME3 demo or possible multiplayer mode.
