Aksys to Bring ‘Otome’ Genre Stateside With Hakuoki: Demon of The Fleeting Blossom

While there are some who might not know what the ‘otome’ genre is, those who do should be glad to learn that Aksys will be bringing Idea Factory’s Hakuoki: Demon of The Fleeting Blossom stateside. This will be the first widely-available ‘otome’, or maiden, game to make its way here.

Hakuoki might sound like a JRPG from the details that we know about it but it has key elements that classify it as ‘otome.’ You follow a female protagonist named ChizuruYukimura who is in search of her missing father. During her search, she encounters the Shinsengumi clan, whose job is to protect the city of Hakuoki while also searching for Chizuru’s father. It appears that the city has a few supernatural secrets and could be the location of Chizuru’s father.

Unlike dating sims designed with the male audience in mind, ‘otome’ titles rely on the player increasing affections among available love interests in a game without the use of sexuality. There is very little to none at all in the genre that is aimed for females within the preteen to teenage years. Hakuoki will have an in-game chart handy for keeping track of romance and corruption levels of the male characters so you can know who to go for or avoid .

Hakuoki: Demon of The Fleeting Blossom is set for a stateside release in the first quarter of 2012 for the Sony PlayStation Portable. The title will be available in stores and on the PSN. Hopefully, the success of this title will bring more ‘otome’ games to our shores in the future.
