Xbox Live Marketplace Update: June 29, 2011

Xbox Live Marketplace Update: June 29, 2011

Prepare yourself for the upcoming Xbox LIVE Summer Of Arcade with some great deals this week.  While they all couldn’t be winners (here’s looking at you TMNT Re-Shelled) make sure you pick up a few of the others on sale.  If you already own these games, there are three new releases in the XBLA this week to tie you up.

Deal Of The Week (Gold Members)

June 28 – July 4

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time Reshelled (400 pts) – Everyones favorite heros in a half-shell are back with remade visuals and style.  Keep in mind, this is a remake of the arcade version and not the SNES version (with tweaked boss fights.)  While the price is alluring, this trek through the past is better left to nostalgia and for newcomers, there are tons of better beat-em-ups in the marketplace today.
  • Lara Croft and the Guardian Of Light (600 pts) – Experience the first ever co-op action-adventure game featuring Lara Croft.  Team up with a friend or go at it alone as you traverse and solve deadly traps, fight hordes of undead enemies, and collect over 60 artifacts and relics.  Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light offers fast-paced action and breathtaking visuals shown through an isometric view in this twin-stick shooter.
  • X-Men Arcade (400 pts) - The classic arcade brawler finally comes home.  This rerelease doesn’t really bring much new but that shouldn’t prevent fans from rejoicing it’s comeback.  Check out Eric’s review of the mobile version here.
  • Comic Jumper (400 pts) – Twisted Pixel’s third title stars Captain Smiley as he attempts to deal with being cancelled.  Join him as he battles through different comic book worlds in this hilarious side-scrolling action platformer.
  • Hard Corps: Uprising (600 pts) - This homage to Konami’s classic Contra series brings hardcore shooting to a new crowd.  Over the top bosses, gameplay instantly familiar to side-scrolling shooters, and some of the most frenetic co-op action is available for half off this week!

Xbox Live Arcade

Backbreaker Vengeance

Release Date: June 29, 2011
Publisher: 505 Games
Developer: NaturalMotion Games
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 1200 Microsoft Points

The lackluster sales for the retail release of Backbreaker seemed to spell doom for a sequel.  The mobile versions have found success and have shown that there’s room in the EA Sports crowded genre.  The original suffered from some major issues but underneath it were some redeemable features.  The Tackle-Alley minigame is back and along with Vengeance, and Supremacy mode for single or multiplayer.  With over 350 waves, unique challenges, and Euphoria-fueled dynamic motion, download the best parts of Backbreaker today!

Half Minute Hero

Release Date: June 29, 2011
Publisher: Xbox LIVE Arcade
Developer: Marvelous Entertainment Inc./ Opus Studio Inc
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 800 Microsoft Points

This PSP title has been rereleased for XBLA.  The game originally scored an 84 on metacritic and looks to contain the same 30 second fun as the original.  Start your quest, meet people who need your help, fight through dark dungeons, earn money, upgrade equipment, level up, and take down the final boss…all in just half a minute!  There are 62 entire RPGs in HALF-MINUTE HERO, each with its own leaderboard to earn medals and compete with friends.

Galaga Legions DX

Release Date: June 29, 2011
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Developer: Namco Bandai
ESRB Rating: E (Everyone)
Price: 800 Microsoft Points

Like Namco Bandai’s Pac-Man CE, Galaga Legions was a very well done reimagining of the classic title.  Also like Pac-Man, Galaga is getting a DX version looking to expand on the originals formula.  The game looks to be just as addictive as the original with screen filling waves aplenty and bullets flying from every direction.

Games On Demand

  • Legendary – $24.99 – This FPS puts you in control of Charles Deckard, an international art thief, who is tricked into opening “Pandora’s Box” by a secret society determined to harness it’s power.  Battle vicious werewolves, griffons, firedrakes, and more as you enter a full-scale war for humanity’s survival.
  • Bionic Commando - $19.99 – Not the excellent remake for the XBLA, but the 3rd-person platformer starring the dreaded out Spencer.  With arguably one of the worst (and most laughed at) twists in gaming history, join Capcom in the butchering of one of their classic franchises.  Or, do yourself a favor and download Bionic Commando: ReArmed instead for half the price and ten times the value.
  • BlazBlue CS - $29.99 – The newest installments of one of the world’s top 2D fighting games is available for download now.  The roster may not be as large as other fighters out there, but it’s depth appears to be far greater.  New characters and tweaks add to the already deep system creating one of the best 2D fighters out today.
