Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Save Data Can’t Be Deleted

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D Save Data Can’t Be Deleted

A user on the NeoGaf forums has posted an image of what looks to be the manual for RE: The Mercenaries 3D and apparently users will not have the ability to delete saved data on the cartridge. In what seems like an attempt to prevent used game sales, could we be seeing this in future 3DS games?

The image which you can see above has a little fine print at the bottom and says: “Note: Saved data on this software cannot be reset.” Reactions to this have been mixed from gamers saying they won’t purchase the game to some saying it doesn’t bother them at all. Apparently this is something that has happened before in Japan due to the high rate of used game sales but this is first time I’m hearing of this restriction. It seems like this would completely prevent someone from re-selling the game so if that is what Capcom is going for, I guess you could say that it’s a success.

It will be interesting to see how big this story gets if gamers really feel slighted by this act or if they simply ignore it all together. Many gamers like to buy the game brand new then re-sell it after they are done playing but with the save data permanently on the cartridge it looks like they won’t be able to do that, unless there are multiple save slots. Personally I don’t think this is that big of a deal but as someone who re-sells their games I would have to think again about buying this title, after-all RE comes in at a hefty $40.

The bigger question is how the industry will react. If the game sells well could this be the start of something new for the 3DS? It will definitely lower the amount of used games on the market but is that the best thing for the industry? I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.  Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D is set to release on the 3DS this week June 28 and will retail for $40.

Note: There has been no official word from Capcom regarding the inability to delete save data but we will update you as soon as there is an official response.
