Rumor: PopCap For Sale, Price: $1B+

PopCap, best known for their smash hit Plants vs Zombies, is apparently up for sale, with the unknown buyer offering over $1 billion for the casual game company.  While the aforementioned PvZ, along with Bejeweled, Zuma, and Peggle have been huge successes, the company brings in “only” around $100-150 million per year, making this a very steep price point.

Although it isn’t clear who’s buying, Zynga is apparently not it.  Right now, the most likely candidates are EA (who bought PlayFish for $400 million in 2009) or an unknown (in the West) Chinese company known as Tencent.  Other rumors suggest it may be Google who is eying PopCap, money in hand.  For now, we can only speculate.

Personally, I’m not thrilled by this news; take overs like this usually aren’t in the best interest of gamers.  However, until we know who’s buying, we can’t say how it will affect the possibility of Plants vs Zombies 2.
