Wii U to Only Support One Wii U Controller
Nintendo, speaking to journalists, after their E3 2011 press conference said that the new Wii U will only support one Wii U controller. Yes, only one.
Seeing the new Wii U controller during the press conference had the audience oohing and aahing. The Wii U controller can play full Wii games independently from the TV screen, play Wii games on the TV screen as a controller, work as a drawing tablet, make video calls, and more. The revelation, that I’m sure Nintendo was none too happy to reveal, came as a great shock to the journalists in attendance, and now to Nintendo fans anxiously awaiting the Wii U’s arrival.
While I did think the new Wii U controller looked a bit out of place with three to four other Wii-Motes on the video demo, I did not take it literally. Nintendo dropped the ball on this one; at least dual controller support should be viable. Here’s hoping Nintendo will add multiple Wii U controller support in an update to the system post-release.

I had read about this, although apparently Iwata has said they plan to “focus” on one-Wii-U controller games, not that it won’t be possible, but I also thought I had read they wouldn’t sell it separately. I guess we will see.
I could see how having more than one Wii U could perhaps pose a problem in terms of lag or processing power, not to mention cost. I wouldn’t be surprised if half the cost of the new Wii U is the controller.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if half the cost of the new Wii U is the controller.”
Considering in the E3 presentation that we only saw the actual console for a brief moment, I’m willing to bet the same.
I don’t see this as a good or bad thing. I’m betting that the Wii U controllers aren’t going to come cheap. I can’t see people rushing out to buy a super expensive controller just to be able to play multiplayer games when an existing Wii controller will work just fine.
IGN just released an update on this topic where Regis Fils’Aime says they [Nintendo] are “doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friend’s house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible.”
They wouldn’t think to research this until now? They didn’t think it would be questioned? Oh, well. I guess we’ll see what happens
LOL yeah I was definitely thinking the same thing. Because then you wouldn’t have a cost issue involved… But considering that we have probably at least a year until this thing hits stores, they have time to figure stuff out.
I’m going out on a limb and saying March of 2012. This is backed up by no actual data, just a guess.
Well, now there are supposedly reports that Nintendo is saying the Wii U is capable of sending images to four controllers. Don’t have the link off hand, but we’ll see.
