E3 2011 Preview: PixelJunk Sidescroller

The PixelJunk franchise has always given gamers really unique and interesting titles. The trend continued with PixelJunk Shooter and at this year’s E3 they revealed their next title which takes the Shooter formula and gives it a retro twist.

PixelJunk Sidescroller takes some of the features from Shooter and turns it into a side-scrolling shooter. Gamers will immediately notice the ascetics of Sidescroller as it uses a retro design with bright neon colors much like Geometry Wars or SuperStardust HD. You’ll also notice a much faster paced gameplay. PixelJunk Sidescroller plays much like retro side-scrolling shoot-em ups. It’s fast paced, hectic at times and you’ll have to cycle through various weapons to be most effective.

You’ll get three weapons: Bullets, Lasers, and Homing Missiles. These are similar to the weapons found in PixelJunk Shooter but obviously you’ll have to react faster to kill enemies. Much like Shooter there are environmental hazards like lava and turrets to deal with. Again like in Shooter you can use water to cool down your vehicle if you get too close to the lava or if you are overheating.

PixelJunk Sidescroller is a great concept, take Shooter which is already a great game and turn up the dial on the action. It’s also nice to see multiplayer action in this side-scrolling shooter. For fans of old school shooters this game could be perfect for you, but I think much like the other PixelJunk titles Sidescroller will most likely appeal to everyone. For more on the game PlayStation Blog will be showing a live demo of the game at 4pm PST. Definitely a pleasant surprise to see a new PixelJunk title at this year’s E3 and while we don’t have an official release date we could be seeing this game this Fall.
